Referee Instruction Program Overview
The Instruction program is structured to train referees in many different areas and skill levels. Their are many different types of instructional clinics:
New Referee Clinics
- These clinics are designed to train people who have never officiated before. There are two types of new referee clinics: Associate Referee Grade 9 and Referee Grade 8.
- During the months of January-March, we try to hold three Grade 8 and three Grade 9 clinics across the state. During the months of July-August, we try to hold two Grade 8 and two Grade 9 clinics across the state.
- Once these clinics are scheduled, it may be possible to host more clinics, based upon availability of instructors. If a town wishes to sponsor their own clinic, the fee for the Grade 9 clinic is $150, and the fee for the Grade 8 clinic is $250. This money goes towards paying the instructor and the distribution of clinic materials.

Recertification Clinics
- These clinics are designed to train people who are currently registered as referees, and wish to renew their registration for the next year.
- During the months of October-December, we try to hold approximately 12 clinics across the state. During the months of January-February, we try to hold 1 or 2 clinics. The last regularly schedule recertification clinic will be held no later than February 28th.
- Once these clinics are scheduled, it may be possible to host more clinics, based upon availability of instructors. If a town wishes to sponsor their own recertification clinic, the fee for the clinic is $60. This money goes towards paying the instructor and the distribution of clinic materials.
Upgrade Clinics
- These clinics are designed specifically for registered referees of grade 8 or higher as part of their process for improving their referee grade status.
- This clinic is normally scheduled for the last Saturday in January, but the date can vary due to various reasons.
- For more specific information about upgrade clinics, please send an email to the State Director of Instruction.
Specialized Clinics
- These clinics are requested by towns for various reasons. Typical types of specialized clinics include:
- Classroom training on specific issues
- Field training excersizes involving signals and positioning
- Field training where referees are "shuttled" in and out of an exhibition game between two teams
- For more specific information about these specialized clinics, please send an email to the State Director of Instruction.
