Monthly Seminars

The State Referee Committee is pleased to announce the offering of a monthly referee training seminar.  Each monthly seminar will visit a different topic of interest to up and  coming referees, divided into an intermediate and advanced session.  The intermediate sessions are geared towards grade 8 referees looking to improve their game.  The advanced sessions are geared towards referees grade 7 and above, as well as those referees who officiate adult matches.

Attendance at these monthly seminars counts towards referee re-certification requirements.  Attendance at 4 sessions (or 2 double sessions) will satisfy your training requirements for that calendar year.

Time:
6:00 PM – 7:30 PM Intermediate Session
7:30 PM – 9:00 PM Advanced Session

Location:
Holiday Inn Express
901 Jefferson Blvd
Warwick, RI

Topics from 2010 seminars have included:

  • Bench Control
  • The Pre-Game
  • Difficult Offside Decisions
  • Excessive Force Challenges
  • Review of the World Cup final

Is there a deadline for the completion of the 6 hours of the monthly seminars for grade 8 re-certification?

    • al ricci, says:

For 2010, any combination that equal 3 hrs, either in Feb or March of 2011 will be sufficent. For 2010, we are accepting 3 hrs of inservice training. But going forward into 2011, we will accept a minimum of 5 hrs. These 5 hours can be completed any time in 2011.

We recently moved from Mass and my sons (ages 13 and 14) are Grade 9 certified, but their recertifications lapsed. To obtain a Grade 9 in Rhode Island, am I correct in understanding that they need to attend two monthly training clinics (intermediate) for a total of 3 hours? If my 14-year old wanted to upgrade to Grade 8 for the Fall 2011, what would be involved with that? Thank you very much!!

      Johnathan,

As a grade 9 who has lapsed his certification, your son can recertify by attending 3 hrs at our monthly training seminar and take the grade 9 recert test. He can also recertify at your local association level. You can contact your local referee coordinator, he/she will be listed under “game time” at the top of our website and click assignors and find your town. Your other son who wants to upgrade to grade 8 can attend a grade 8 clinc that will be offered in the fall.
